Hope. What is hope? Textbook definition, “ a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen”. Hope is that bubbling feeling in your stomach. It is a light happy feeling. Hope is what motivates you. It makes you believe that you can succeed. Hope is easy to have, but even easier to lose. When you lose hope, it’s practically giving up. YOU no longer believe that something can happen. And when something you hoped would happen, doesn’t, it can crush you. Immediately putting out that spark of hope. It can be so hard to not lose hope after many disappointments. We are always told, “good things happen to those who wait”. But how many times can we relight our flame of hope? How many times can we pick ourselves back up and try again? How many times can we brush off the feelings of pain, embarrassment, and frustration that comes from failure?
Sometimes, we do give up. We lose hope. We throw our hands in the air and quit. Wash our hands of the situation. When things don’t go as planned, it is easier to stop trying and accept defeat. We accept that it was never meant to happen. But where will this lead you? Nowhere. If we gave up after every minor inconvenience we would never accomplish anything. Our failures strengthen us as people. They humble us. Without hope, you won’t move forward. You will be left stagnant. Life will continue flowing without you. It is up to you to find the courage to hope and go with the current, even if we don’t know where it will take us.
There will always be a light at the end of the tunnel. But it’s those who keep trudging through the losses and disappointments that get to reach that light. If we don’t keep trying, we will be left in the dark forever. Our hope is the small beam of light that guides us through the long and winding passageways of life. If you’re willing to follow this light through all of the twists and turns, there will be an end. An end to the pain and disappointment.
“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope”
- Martin Luther King Jr
